Inter Miami's Messi Fails to Play in Hyped Hong Kong Match, Drawing Ire

The Hong Kong government said it was “extremely disappointed” after Argentine superstar Lionel Messi sat on the bench for the entire match between his team Inter Miami and a local counterpart on Sunday. Spectators booed and jeered David Beckham, co-owner of the US team, when he tried to give a speech. Rishaad Salamat and David Ingles report on Bloomberg Television.

Is not about he can play or not. Is his attitude! No respect whatsoever…. Full house in Hk but 30% full in Japan. Who give u the biggest welcome?

  2. I live in Miami and just to let you know that many people have flown to Miami from around the U.S. to see him play last season and sometimes he did not play because of injuries. Some of those fans paid more than $600 a ticket. This is Futbol and players get injured from time to time. Every player is allowed to get injured. Even Messi. It's a chance you take when you buy the ticket. I will be going to the game on the 15th in Miami and I know it's a friendly and I am hoping to see him but I know there is a chance that I will not. It's part of the game. Saying your disrespected is going a little too far.

  3. @yiwu9968 dijo:

This type of game is more like a concert. The rock star has to be there or there is no point.

  4. @MrSKview dijo:

At the end of the game and when the award ceremony began, Messi was originally following the queue, but he quietly walked around the queue, from behind the award-giving guests and staff to the front. He stood close to each other and avoided shaking hands. Messi’s behaviour was disrespectful!

  5. @vandien9721 dijo:

Not surprising this kind of behaviour comes from a Zionists supporter

  6. @kyleimpactx dijo:

Messi's lack of respect for his fans is disappointing and doesn't warrant respect from others. Consider the disappointment of kids who saved for months for tickets, flights, and hotels. It's only fair for Messi to refund their hard-earned money!

  7. Now really disappointed and doubt personality /

How happy and smiley the other day in Japan ( just one day but big difference compared to I Hongkong

  8. @Simon-lk1um dijo:

Who tf care about Xi Jinping’s puppet Hong Kong 😂

  9. Ban Messi ,Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham to China and Hong Kong

  10. I used to like watching Messi, playing soccer, since it happened in Hong Kong. I stopped watching him.but not anymore.

  11. @jojoma2074 dijo:

Shame on Messi! Not even deserve being a soccer player if his attitude is such bad towards the organizer and fans! This is not about his excuse of injury or not, his uncooperative attitude and poker face are totally inappropriate! Remember, they receive money for this football show and the tickets sold in Hong Kong are almost the highest among the different stations of their tour! All the marketing emphasized his playing in the game while there was no sign or alert of his injury, this is definitely a planned cheating of Hong Kong people's money and act to disrespect Hong Kong in front of the world! He should pay for his irresponsible and impolite behaviours!

  12. @tangpz dijo:

No smiling, no awarding, no handshakes, no speaking, and of course, no competing. Five No. Racial discrimination or political motives, Choose one or perhaps both.

  13. Great job on the boycott. Now he's back in the freedom of Japan. I'm sure he'll feel a lot better.

  14. @jase298hkhk dijo:

I'm boycotting anything Messi endorsed. Adidas, Budweiser, Mastercard, Pepsi, Saudi Arabia tourism and Socios.

  15. @vpn4981 dijo:

Don't be fooled by his fake appearance

  16. Hongkong will definitely register this case and report to the China central government, it might result in a full ban of these celebrities from the China market!

  17. @acheungjuju dijo:

Not a surprise to me with his behavior at PSG. We all know that he chooses his matches. In that kind of club, the medical staff and coach are not the decision maker, it was himself who didn't want to go to the pitch.

  18. Messi, I have been your fan for decades. I, however, regret to tell you that you broke the children's hearts and made them cry in the Inter Miami pre-season match in HK. They paid US$620 a ticket for you, however, you did not play even a second throughout the friendly match. You disrespected your fans from different countries and cities, such as China, Singapore, Malaysia, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, and so on, to HK for you. Some fans traveled by air and spent their valuable annual leaves, time, and much money on renting hotel rooms in HK. Their hearts, finally, were broken by your no-show on the pitch and misbehavior. Even though the decision might be made by the coach, organizer, or the bosses of your club, the HK media and fans pointed at you for this suspected cheating. This is not a trivial issue since the victims at the scene were furious and became your haters. Please take some remedial actions to save your reputation.

  19. Go to hell Messi! Rubbish! Cheater!

  20. @davidtu1219 dijo:

    Shame on Messi and Beckham.

  21. @nicklee5324 dijo:

Lost all respect for Messi after what he did to the Hing Kong people!!

  22. @hamtan99 dijo:

Messi is billionaire.what are you? Hk fans

  23. We expect an apology from Messi and a refund from Inter Miami FC because, despite potential minor injuries, his conduct during the ceremony was completely disappointing. Refusing to shake hands with Hong Kong's Chief Executive, John Lee, and other officials was not in keeping with the respectful demeanor expected of a public figure. Hong Kong extended its utmost hospitality by sending an excellent delegation to welcome him, yet we have not observed such behavior from a football star of his stature before.

  24. Messi and Beckham should apologize to the Hong Kong fans. They don't even have the basic respect for the fans! Taking a quote from Scottish player John Stein, football is for the fans. It can be the greatest game in the world but if there are no people to watch it, it becomes nothing. The fans are the livelihood of the game.

  25. @MD-pb5ll dijo:

This is the beginning of a messy team. You will not last when you disrespected your fans/customers.

  26. You buy shares and it’s a risky investment. You pay for sporting tickets weeks in advance of the game and it’s also a risky investment as players get injured

  27. Shame on Inter Miami. Messi’s reputation is damaged in stone faced those passionate fans whether he’s actively participating or went along with the scam.

  28. @yw4635 dijo:

Maybe Messi is tired of being used like a tool. But i cannot find an excuse that he didn't show any respect to his fans. Sorry for his fans.

  29. Imagine unwatchable a famous football player which watch the match with u and not. Play that match😂😂😂😂 😂😂😂😂😂😂

  30. He didn't even apologise. Scammer

  31. @mankeisham dijo:

paying 600 USD per person but refuse to play . Messi has no compassion and no respect to people in Hong Kong . Scam. They need to refund to the people .

  32. Having so much money, and so little integrity. What a shame.

  33. @twoodard3 dijo:

I don’t want to hear about NBA players not playing. This was wild

  34. @drcfa dijo:

Messi was played in Beijing 06/15/2023 to celebrate dictator Xi Jinping's birthday, which was a a lifetime of shame for his career. Messi for his own reputation, just don't play for an anti-human regime. Xi Jinping and his communist party is terrorist organization

  35. If you know you're injured why are you even doing a pre-warm up? messi should've come out like a man and apologize to the people who spent money and time to go see him, they did not go to see anybody else. shame!

  36. @b2yes dijo:

Messi, you are insulting yourself and be seen before the world.

  37. @CW-yg7qm dijo:

Messi is a shame to the football world!
