'Refund!': Fans left angry as Lionel Messi sits out Hong Kong friendly

Fans booed after Lionel Messi sat on the bench for the entire 90 minutes of Inter Miami’s pre-season friendly against a Hong Kong XI due to a hamstring strain.

Luis Suárez also failed to take to the pitch because of a knee injury he picked up in Saudi Arabia. The booing became louder in the final minutes with some disappointed fans also chanting ‘refund’ at the Hong Kong Stadium.

After the match, which the MLS side won 4-1, Inter Miami’s head coach Gerardo Martino apologised but explained that ‘if we had any possibility that they could have played for a while we would have done it. But to do so would have been taking serious risks and that’s why we took this decision together with the technical staff.’

  1. If Messi had been absent due to health reasons, it would have been in line with the contract and understandable. However, that was not the case. Messi chose to skip the friendly match in Hong Kong to preserve his energy for other competitions, which is a breach of contract and demonstrates a lack of integrity. There is no sense of commitment to the agreement.

  2. Messi is just a fraudster.

  3. Messi didnot respect the Chinese fan, and that’s why they are mad. Also they cant watch Messi, they came all over to HongKong but now it’s a waste.

  4. Messi did nothing in HK but played in Japan. If that's not discrimination against the Chinese, I don't know what it is…

    I don't understand!!!

  6. Genuine Hker support Lionel Messi, those fans in the stadium are little pink fr. Prc

  7. I just bought his Argentina Jersey after watching this incident, many Hongkongers are happy of his behaviour in HK

  8. @123xxxgogo dijo:

Shame on Messi! How serious was the injury that you couldn’t play for 10 minutes? For a friendly match? The fans got the right to boo him. I would too if I were there.😡

  9. Who knows that Miami team without Messy Messi. They charged that quite amount of money and betrayed the fans.

  10. @lilygan258 dijo:

wow he went japan n play..😅. no more injury😂

  11. @CKC947 dijo:

Messi might be the greatest footballer in the world but not a qualified politician at this stage. It is a tragedy for a footballer to play international politics in a field he has limited information.

  12. Scandalous club communication, indisputable professional misconduct, this club will end up breaking what it has accomplished, its club did not respect its public 😢

  13. "Pedimos disculpas ?" Pero se quedan con el dinero !!! A mi no me sacan ni un KILO aqui en Miami.

  14. Unacceptable … Hope this is not a pre-view of whats coming to Miami. Apologies NOT ACCEPTED. People need to be REFUNDED

  16. A big football player Messi is also the biggest SCAMMER on the planet. Shame on Messi.👎👎👎

  17. when Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't show up, he would refunded and apologized, while Messi just breached the contract and did nothing.

  18. @Hooked007 dijo:

    Messi😂😂😂🎉🎉

  19. Leo wouldn't play for even one minute, it's unfair for those fans who travel for thousand miles and pay much bills to see him. He betrayed us.

  20. It’s a scam of the century indeed!! Just over the night a player having skipped a sold-out match by reason of purported injury becomes apparently recovered like magic and appears energetic during training and the 34-min. game in Japan!? Ask Messi whether he knows what it means by code of ethics and professionalism! He has obviously got messed up between personal agenda and sportsmanship!

A shame as a football star

  22. @hogwart4821 dijo:

Messi is now a SHAME of FOOTBALL.

  23. @aczbdk dijo:

I fully upport Messi, what happened in HK is not Messi's fault. The HK government and organizer did a very poor job managing the event, they also tried to scam Messi to achieve their political & financial gain.

  24. well done Messi. never back down before dictatorship. Real Hong kongers love u.

  25. @threeeyekid dijo:

    1) Just utilize the charge backs mechanism if paid by credit card

    2) let's see if all sponsorships in China drop him, hk gov should also press charges on the organization for deception and violation of contractual terms

  26. @vandien9721 dijo:

They don't want your apology. They want their refund 😂

  27. @abc2390986 dijo:

He just played for 30+ mins in Japan. Maybe this is a hard reality check for people in Hong Kong. The place you live in is no longer attractive. Especially when few years ago you just stood and watched these revolutionary got busted.
